Most of us definitely know who is david, or at least ever heard of him. To make things clear, we are not talking about a professional football player, or some guy in your neighbourhood, we’re talking about a prophet, the one that had a fight with goliath, and win, obviously. Well, if that still doesn’t ring a bell, you might want to google “david” first and read the story about him, but if that’s too much, don’t worry, we’ll add some context so you could catch up about what happened.

David is an example of a great leader, he unite his people and build a great empire at that time. There might be some confusion about who he actually was, but for this article, we’re gonna use islamic interpretation of him.

In the perspective of islam, he is a prophet who became king after he succesfully defeat goliath in a war. But far before that, the jews was lost and need someone to lead them after the death of their prophet, moses. In Quran stated that after the death of moses, they were asking to their other prophet to look a king for them, their prophet answered “how if perhaps you were obligated to war, you all wouldn’t want to do it?”, They answered “Why wouldn’t we war in the way of Allah, whereas we were expelled from our hometown and separated from our children?” But when the war is obligated to them, they turn away, except a fraction of them.

This may seems like just a stories from the past, but if we looking to current situation, things like this happens a lot almost in every circumstances in our life.

There’s a lot of lesson we could take only from that part of Quran, we will discuss some of them.

First, every single effort to change commonly arise from an idea that initiated by a small group of people in society. almost in every big company, party, or even a state, start from a group of people that are trying to make a change. Take some of big companies for example, like Apple, Google, they’re started in a garage, from several people, but then with their hardwork and perseverance, that idea grow and become such a big entity. This imply on how important a small amount of group in the formation of something big. It always started by several people, who defend their ideas, eventhough people around them mocking them, or failure hitting them again and again, they still survive. Defending their idea, defending their vision. It’s so important to have a group of people who have a faith in what they’re struggling.

And something that’s not less important is a needs for a leader. A great leader to be precise. This leadership is needed to integrate all of the social power element and transform it to a huge political power. Every great nation has a great leader who initiate them, Soekarno, Washington, and Hitler, is just an example of how powerful the impact of a leader is. Even a modern company, Apple has Steve Jobs, Tesla has Elon Musk, and many more example which I couldn’t mention all here. We’re definitely need a great leader to start a revolution.

And last but not least, we need a value legitimation to make a revolutionary change. This could be an idea, concept, ideology, or even religion. There always some value that brought by a great entity in the past. Medieval kingdoms has religion as their state base, modern day states has ideology as their value and they will defend it, Apple has a security and user-friendly value from the beginning. An idea is just as important as the other factor I mentioned before, without a value to bring or a vision to achieve, the leader and the group of people were just a normal group, a hobby community, or something like that.

Maybe you were asking why this has something to do with David. Well, there actually so many more we can take from learning in David past, as this is a perk of learning a history. Of course we all agree that history will always be an integral part of human being, especially the history of a great people. In David’s case, they need a great leader to free the Jews and give them a better life, which then the prophet inaugurate Thalut (I dont know what Thalut called in English, if you know, please kindly tell me) and unite the small group of people to defend their value, their religion. After a process of development they finally could be free from Goliath dominance and live in a prosperity life. Which then David take the mantle of a leader and continue lead them years later.
